However, the conservation of value doesn’t imply that financial activities are unproductive. They play a crucial role in facilitating economic growth by channeling savings to productive investments. Financial intermediaries, such as banks and investment firms, play a vital role in this process. They gather funds from savers and allocate them to businesses and individuals who need capital to invest in new projects, expand operations, or acquire assets. While intermediaries profit from this process, they create value by improving the efficiency of capital allocation.

A critical challenge to the conservation of value arises from information asymmetry and behavioral biases. Market participants often have different information and different interpretations of that information. This can lead to mispricing of assets and misallocation of capital. Furthermore, cognitive biases, such as overconfidence and herd behavior, can exacerbate these problems. For instance, during asset bubbles, investors often become irrationally exuberant and drive prices far beyond their fundamental values. This eventually leads to a correction, where value is transferred from those who bought at the peak to those who sell before the crash.

Understanding and applying the conservation of value principle is crucial for making sound financial decisions.
